Heath Tucker: 5:30-7
Raine Miller: 5:30-7
Brian Pitts: 5:30-6:30

Work Done:

Helped a guy with computer problems. He needs a new video card.
[John]

Donated, installed, and set up a new wireless router. Network name is
"Common Ground" and password is, I think, just "password". You don't
need the password to get on--just to change settings. [Heath]

Caught up on financial matters. Wrote CG a check for the balance of
the money we owed them--we agreed to give them half the money from the
Community Connection thing, and John had written them a check to cover
the taxes, but the other part hadn't been paid. We're straight now.
Also, organized and prepared a deposit--it's ready to go to the bank.
Everything is inside the red zipper envelope inside the locked box
[including the debit card] and the slip's all filled out. John might
be able to do that this week. [Mike]

Continued working on installing Edubuntu on more of the small white
Dells to give them to the Community Connection people this weekend.
Things haven't been going well, but I believe some progress has been
made. [John, Raine]

Helped Brian unload computers he borrowed to take to the forum in
Atlanta. We have eight more now. [Brian, Mike, John]

Spoke to Susannah from CG while preparing the deposit. She'd like us
to come up with a basic flyer [quarter-sheet is fine] for them to hand
out when they are doing their events. I told her it was a good idea
and we'd work on it. More details are forthcoming. [Mike]

Work Done:

Spent the whole day trying to install Edubuntu on computers. We had 6 computers going at once. Unfortunately we made no progress what so ever. :-( Despite lots of effort, we were only able to get one to boot from the CD drive. And that one failed about half way through the install. [John, Lauren, Raine]

Checked in on the wireless. It still does not work. [John]

Notes:

Bad day I suppose. No real progress. We were not able to boot from the CD drives on basically all on the computers. I read more about the issue with installing "Edubuntu 7.04 Desktop." It is intended just to be used as a live CD I believe. We were using the Edubuntu 7.04 Server CD to install as a workstation, I believe this is the way to they say to set up computers with edubuntu, but we did not even get one installed.

"Open Business Models", First Thoughts

I am about a third of the way through reading "Open Business Models" by Henry Chesbrough. It is very interesting read. It relates to many of the things I have been doing this summer.

The book talk a lot about managing intellectual property within a business environment. Chesbrough believes most businesses need to open themselves up more and create more open business models. He points out that many companies leave 90% of their I.P. unused. Very inefficient. He thinks many companies should find way to share there knowledge between each other.

At the same time Chesbrough points out that there is such a thing as being too open. He gives the example of a company that wrote an unique operating system. The company was trying to get Microsoft interested in developing software for it. But instead Microsoft took many of the ideas and released a rival OS and put them out of business.

More to come as I read...
